ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Department of Sociology was established in the year 1987 with the vision of creating the world of equity and social justice. Initially the department concentrated on research and later it started offering Post Graduate and M.Phil in Sociology.In 2012 it expanded its horizon and thus started Master of Social Work for the benefit of students from rural urban and tribal areas with three specialization viz., Medical & Psychiatric Social Work, Community Development and Human Resource Management. UGC sponsored PG Diploma in Human Rights Education was initiated from 2012. The Counselling Center is also initiated to address the grievances and facilitate the students to overcome the issues faced by them. The department is also coordinating the activities and Courses under UGC funded Centre for Gandhian Studies.
Since last 30 years, the Department has taken up challenges and remained as guiding force for the UG, PG, MSW, M.Phil and Doctoral Research in Sociology, Social Work and Women's Studies. Most of the students' Research projects and course components are much more inter disciplinary. The department has also been encouraging research and also focusing on extension outreach programs so as to enable the students to have a live experience of the class room teaching. Many of the students placed in good positions after the completion of their courses.
The Department takes maximum efforts in the holistic development of the students by developing the various skills with the opportunity to participate in variety of programs and to be aware of their rights. The students are also given an opportunity to earn while they learn.
Besides regular academic prrgrams involving teaching and research activities, the Department in collaboration with leading Voluntary organizations/NGOs has been actively conducting socially relevant outreach programs for the development os socially and economically disadvantageous of the local communities. Various collaborative activities are consistently undertaken to engender attitudinal and social cjange regarding vital social issues. The courses equip the students to grow as an interdisciplinary thinker by providing knowledge and understanding of core issues on society across established Social Science disciplines.
